SE7EN Movie Script ✦ Handmade Book

The assignment was to create an experimental book out of a movie script, using only typography to express mood, theme, and action. The movie I chose was SE7EN (Seven), the 1995 thriller featuring Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt, who are newly acquainted detectives trying to track down a murderer. However, the murders are each performed in the way of one of the seven deadly sins. The original film is in a gritty 1990’s/early 2000’s style. For my rendition, I wanted to incorporate more of the traditional biblical elements into the design, while still honoring the gritty and textured look of the original film.

✦ Detective Somerset (Morgan Freeman) is indicated by the text within black boxes

✦ Detective David Mills (Brad Pitt) is the more sporadic sans serif type

✦ Jon Doe (Kevin Spacey) is the red, and lettered type

✦ All other characters are expressed through italicized type, which are not mentioned by name

Process

From the layout and cover concepts, to creating physical textures and book binding, this project challenged my ability to create an impressive physical end product. I went through many phases of how to best honor the script and immerse the reader with intentional textures and visuals.
