Blow the Whistle ✦ Cetacean Social Change Campaign

Instead of a friendly, passive approach to raising awareness, BLOW THE WHISTLE calls for action - now. Blowholes refer to how a cetacean breathes, and some make whistle-like noises to communicate. The act of whistle blowing refers to exposing wrong or immoral activity, which is the perfect backing for this campaign. Whales are treated horribly, and if we are to save our oceans, we need to protect those who help nurture it. Through the use of social media, posters, and a comprehensive website, this organization will address, educate, and inspire action to save the cetaceans, and the ocean as a whole. This project was in collaboration with Charles Nye, a graduate student researching whale conservation and genetics at Oregon State University. He provided research, and initial issues that needed attention.

Process

To achieve a more approachable appeal to the campaign, illustration was a key component to reaching out to viewers to start a tough conversation. Illustrations played a key role in the direction of this campaign, and helped set the tone for the rest of the deliverables. I wanted to showcase the whimsical nature of the animals, while using color and layout to create structure and a sense of creditability.
